    Renowned Polish-American historian of interbellum Poland and Professor Emerita of the University of Kansas Anna Maria Cienciala passed away on December 24, 2014 in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

    A historian of Polish interwar diplomacy and the Second Republic of Poland’s foreign policy, Anna Maria Cienciala was the author of such books as: ”Poland and the Western Powers 1938-1939”, „Polish Foreign Policy 1926-1932” or „Polish-Bolshevik War 1919-1920”.

     

    Born in the Free City of Gdańsk, she attended middle and high school in England; university studies in England, Canada, and U.S. (B.A. Liverpool, 1952, M.A. McGill, 1955; Ph.D. Indiana, 1962). She taught at the University of Ottawa and the University of Toronto before coming to the University of Kansas in 1965.

     

    Professor Emerita of History, also the Center of Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies, KU. She taught courses on East Central Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries; Poland from the Partitions to the Present; Communist Nations; and Nationalism and Communist in East Central Europe.

     

    Specializing in 20th century Polish, European, Soviet, and American diplomacy 1919–1945, she has published 2 books, edited 5, and contributed chapters to 18. Her total number of publications as of January 2014 is 202, including  academic articles; book reviews in American, Canadian, Polish, and German historical journals as well as articles in popular publications, most of them in Polish.

     

    In recognition of her contributions to the Republic of Poland, President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski awarded Anna Maria Cienciala on May 16, 2014 with the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.

     

    Memorial service at the University of Kansas in Lawrence will be held on January 22, 2015 and will be attended by the Consul of the Republic of Poland in Chicago.

     

    Holy Mass will be offered in Warsaw in the first half of January 2015 (tbd) and in New York City’s St. Stanislaus Church, B.M. in Manhattan on January 18, 2015 at 12:00 PM.
